Возможно, Стив Джобс и будет это отрицать, но iPad является прямым потомком Newton. Поэтому, стоит отдать должное электронному устройству компании, основательно подзабытому даже многими мак-юзерами.
Что такое Newton? Идея персонального цифрового помощника была впервые представлена главой Apple Джоном Скалли в 1987 году, а начало проекта Newton положено в 1990 году. Первый прототип устройства Newton появился спустя два года. Незадолго перед уходом Скалли в отставку в 1993 году анонсирован Newton MessagePad. К сожалению, MessagePad оказался крайне неудачным и стал объектом для шуток: ключевая функция устройства – распознавание рукописного текста, работала очень плохо.
В 1995 году – через два года после выхода Ньютона, CEO Apple Майкл Шпиндлер начинает искать инвесторов для поддержки проекта Newton. В январе 1996 года Шпиндлер оставляет пост главы компании и управляющим становится Гил Амелио. Новый CEO объявил, что отделение Newton становится независимой компанией Newton, Inc.
Амелио подал в отставку 9 июля 1997, и бразды правления взял в руки Стив Джобс. Ньютон, Inc снова становится дочерней компаний Apple и вскоре выходит новый усовершенствованный Newton MessagePad 2100. Пожалуй, это была лучшая модель карманного компьютер Newton. Но устройство запоздало с выходом и было слишком ничтожно, по крайней мере в глазах Джобса. В феврале 1998 года Apple официально закрыла проект “Ньютон”.
